What is Circadian Rhythms?
Circadian Rhythms exists with the purpose of producing a regular music event for the Auckland Gothic community. This event is designed to fulfil three aims. First, to present a sample of all the great Goth music (both old and new) that is produced around the world. Second, to entertain all who choose to participate or to simply attend in an environment that is conducive to music appreciation. Third, to produce events that foster a sense of community.
Circadian Rhythms stands in opposition to the Cult of Personality, the Tyranny of the DJ, and the resultant constant repetition of songs. By this we mean the event structure and its content will be the product of common consensus, rather than of one individual. We believe that this will help serve our aims by introducing a variety similar to that found within our community.
We do not mean to imply that that individuals are incapable of producing their own varied and informative events. Rather that we, as an organisation, wish to emphasise a community approach to producing events that appeal to a wide range of tastes.
The Events.
Events are held monthly and out of synch with other entertainment
in order to avoid competition. We want more, not less.
Events are held, whenever possible, in spaces that allow an atmosphere
where people can sit and talk, or dance in close proximity to each
other, without the expectation that they should have to do one or
the other. No pressure and a pleasant environment. We aspire to
have artworks and decorations at each affair in order to make it
a more complete experience, rather than a bar where music is played
in the hope it will encourage you to drink. Art contributions will
regularly be sought from the greater community in order to keep
the environment and experience fresh
There are regular request segments in each event, formed from
submissions made previously via online forums and email. This list
will be published and regularly updated online, and we promise to
play as many reasonable submissions as possible, time allowing.
Each event includes a section dedicated to a selected theme or
band, or a live performance segment. In the interests of furthering
our own music education, as well as that of the audience, each featured
artist or theme is accompanied by a pamphlet providing relevant
information - History, Discography, Images, Reviews and the like.
This segment may be dedicated to new bands, or to seminal bands
if so determined by common consensus within Circadian Rhythms and
from community input via the web forum. Prizes related to the featured
artist are also an aspect of a Circadian Rhythms event.
Bigger and Better Things.
In addition to DJ sets of featured artists, Circadian Rhythms also
incorporates occassional live performances, featuring the finest
musical talent from here and abroad. In the past, Circadian Rhythms
have been host to Pulchritude, The Magdalene, Clear Stream Temple,
Gydja, N.U.T.E, the Mercy Cage, Resurrection Eve, and The Syndicate.
There is a strong common desire within this organisation to promote and encourage local artists in their mission to produce quality “dark” music. We believe that music is more than just entertainment. It is an art, and artists serve us as a community, and in some way make us that little bit better. Since the government won’t support them we had best do so.
We need You!
As in any undertaking of this sort, it is the people who show up
who make each event a success or a failure. The more of you who
show up, the better we can make future events. Although Circadian
Rhythms itself is made up of a few people, we realise that the community
is bigger and more varied than just us. Each individual is a part
of the 'scene', and should have the opportunity to have their voice
heard and considered. Thus, if you think you have could have an
input to our events, we would welcome email with details. Send in
requests. Tell people who may be interested in the music. Tell us
about great bands we are not playing. Don't be afraid of contacting
us, we want to hear your opinions (No, really!).
